Magazine Research

I am in main control of creating the magazine for this task. Although this is my area, Kirsty will still have input and will help with major details and decisions to ensure that we are both happy with the final product. We also need to make a magazine front cover to advertise our film/trailer. This will need to therefore include the typical features of a magazine front cover such as bar code, title, price, features in the magazine, date and of course the name of the film and magazine.

A very famous film magazine is one simply called 'Film'. I am going to look closely at this magazine so that i know what features i want to include in our film magazine.
Looking at these film magazine covers they all have a very striking picture as the background and a bold name. The bar code is usually at the bottom of the page whether it is at the left or the right is not a major issue however it should be placed clearly along with the price of the magazine and the date. I want to make sure that a consistent colour scheme is included in order to ensure that the magazine looks professional at all times. I ensured that i did this last year when creating a music magazine and it worked well.
I should also include some information on things other than our movie trailer as it is inevitable that the magazine is not going to be solely about our trailer, therefore i should add text about features that are inside the magazine on other films, win tickets to film premieres etc. This would be under the promotional stuff that i will include on the front cover which is essential in order to help sell the magazine.
I now need to decide a name for my magazine.

This is particularly a good magazine to look at for us as it is promoting a horror film. I particularly like the photo as it immediately portrays that the film is scary as apposed to comedy or romantic for example. Although we are not going to use a photo even remotely similar for our magazine cover, i think that it needs to instantly give away what type of film we are advertising.

Looking at this film cover, there is no other information on the cover appart from that related to the Spider Man movie which is the main feature. I think that this works very well and is extremely eye catching and striking. However, i do not think it would be wise for us to copy this as you rarely find a magazine front cover with minimal information on, therefore we do not want to risk it looking un-professional. This is just an example of a different type of cover that still looks very good.

Looking at all of these magazine front covers, one thing that they have in common is the way that they keep a consistent font style, instead of having a different font for the title of the magazine to the rest of the text on the page. I am not sure whether i am going to interpret this into my own magazine yet, however i will look into it.

For this 'Total film' magazine cover it is totally focused on the harry potter film, I like the fact that the picture is very striking and completely focus on the Harry Potter film and do very well in promoting it. I want to interpret this ito my magazine front cover. I want to very much focus on our trailer/film. Although i am not sure that i will not include any other text like this front cover.
This is a better example of what i want my magazine to look like (not in the way it is laid out or colours etc. as this is not for a horror film), the factors that i like are teh way that it focuses very much on promoting the specific film although includes information on other features inside the magazine. I think that this cover is very effective in advertising.

  1. This is a good start to your magazine research. You need to focus down to exactly what you want to do. Perhaps you can create also an extra blog page which draws out specific details from the research you have done that will appear on your own magazine. I am thinking about details like the one you have already pointed out - the bar code.
