Practice/Research for Magazine

I used this picture that i found on Google in order to create a 'Mock' magazine front cover. I did this so that we could see exactly what we wanted our magazine front cover to look like when we had our own photographs to create the real cover. I tried to find a picture that resembled the kind of picture we wanted to take as much as i could. I am going to use Georgia again and i want to have her about this distance and also screaming therefore i thought that this was perfect. However i do not want our picture to be black and white.

Here is the practice one that I have created. I have made it as professional as i could. The typical features that I have included are, the date, the price of the magazine, the bar code, the 'special feature' which is our film Bird man. I have also included the website of the magazine which is not necessarily a 'typical' feature as it is not included on every single magazine as not all have a website however i think it makes it look a little m ore professional and it fits in well therefore i have included it. On the right hand side i have included other features that are in the magazine, all related to horror films in order to keep in with the purpose of the magazine. For this practice magazine the name of our film/trailer in the maroon/brown colour stands out very well with the black and white background and the rest of the text. It makes it very eye catching with the smaller text around it. I think that when we create our real magazine front cover with our own picture we need to ensure that we do the same and do what we can to make it stand out as much as ours will not have a black and white background and more colour will be included.

I have used a consistent colour scheme of greys, black and white. This is something that we specifically wanted to achieve in order to prevent it from looking childish and unprofessional. I need to ensure again that we do this when creating our real magazine front colour as we will not be able to use black and white text alone as it may not match the colours of the background. Therefore we need to choose which colours we use wisely.

One feature of this mock up that i think I should change slightly is the text in the right hand side. I would move it up very slightly and add some more on the bottom to fill up space a little more.

Photos for the magazine and poster cover

These are the pictures that we have taken to use for the front cover of our poster. Some of them include one of the group, Georgia however most do not as we decided that it would be most effective to use a picture of the woods as this is where the trailer is based and it is the main feature. However we thought it would definitely be wise to take a mixture so that we had a few to chose from.

This is a picture that is supposed to create an image of a deserted campsite with one of the groups jackets left behind mysteriously, however i do not think that it works that well.

I really like this one as it is quite dark which is good because our trailer/film is set at nigh time, i also think that it is effective because it is clear that Georgia is alone which is a key feature of our trailer (gradually each member being separated from the group and isolated, lost) however i think that if anything she looks content, not at all scared which is not the effect we are going for.

I particularly like this picture as you can see the moon between the trees making it look very mysterious.

This is one of the best one of Georgia as i think her facial expression gives an idea that she is genuinely scared. However i do not think it would be clear as to whats going on.

I think that this is the best photo as the setting looks very scary and it is clear that the film is set in the woods, yet it doesn't give too much away and remains mysterious. I think that it is also instantly clear when looking at this that it is promoting a horror film.

I do not think that this is a very good picture at all as it is completely unclear as to what the meaning is. Although we know that it is a picture taken from the 'campsite'. This would be unclear to anyone who had not watched the trailer.

Looking at all of these photos we are not sure that any of them would be particularly effective for a magazine front cover. We think that many of them would be perfect for a poster however i do not think, after looking at these, that these would be the best choice.

We are going to take some more photographs close up of one of the groups faces to use for the magazine. This is after doing some more research particularly on 'Empire' magazine.

I particularly like this magazine front cover because it is very effective in portraying a scary film. I think that the close up works very well and this is exactly the sort of thing that i am going for. However, obviously we will not have the face paint etc.

Chosing the magazine name

I have four potential names for our film magazine
1. KCFilm (KirstyCatherine Film)
2. Total Film
3. Film world
4. Horror Monthly

We have decided to call the magazine Horror Monthly. This is because we think it will help portray that we are advertising a horror film and creating a horror trailer no matter what picture we are using for the front cover.

Magazine Research

I am in main control of creating the magazine for this task. Although this is my area, Kirsty will still have input and will help with major details and decisions to ensure that we are both happy with the final product. We also need to make a magazine front cover to advertise our film/trailer. This will need to therefore include the typical features of a magazine front cover such as bar code, title, price, features in the magazine, date and of course the name of the film and magazine.

A very famous film magazine is one simply called 'Film'. I am going to look closely at this magazine so that i know what features i want to include in our film magazine.
Looking at these film magazine covers they all have a very striking picture as the background and a bold name. The bar code is usually at the bottom of the page whether it is at the left or the right is not a major issue however it should be placed clearly along with the price of the magazine and the date. I want to make sure that a consistent colour scheme is included in order to ensure that the magazine looks professional at all times. I ensured that i did this last year when creating a music magazine and it worked well.
I should also include some information on things other than our movie trailer as it is inevitable that the magazine is not going to be solely about our trailer, therefore i should add text about features that are inside the magazine on other films, win tickets to film premieres etc. This would be under the promotional stuff that i will include on the front cover which is essential in order to help sell the magazine.
I now need to decide a name for my magazine.

This is particularly a good magazine to look at for us as it is promoting a horror film. I particularly like the photo as it immediately portrays that the film is scary as apposed to comedy or romantic for example. Although we are not going to use a photo even remotely similar for our magazine cover, i think that it needs to instantly give away what type of film we are advertising.

Looking at this film cover, there is no other information on the cover appart from that related to the Spider Man movie which is the main feature. I think that this works very well and is extremely eye catching and striking. However, i do not think it would be wise for us to copy this as you rarely find a magazine front cover with minimal information on, therefore we do not want to risk it looking un-professional. This is just an example of a different type of cover that still looks very good.

Looking at all of these magazine front covers, one thing that they have in common is the way that they keep a consistent font style, instead of having a different font for the title of the magazine to the rest of the text on the page. I am not sure whether i am going to interpret this into my own magazine yet, however i will look into it.

For this 'Total film' magazine cover it is totally focused on the harry potter film, I like the fact that the picture is very striking and completely focus on the Harry Potter film and do very well in promoting it. I want to interpret this ito my magazine front cover. I want to very much focus on our trailer/film. Although i am not sure that i will not include any other text like this front cover.
This is a better example of what i want my magazine to look like (not in the way it is laid out or colours etc. as this is not for a horror film), the factors that i like are teh way that it focuses very much on promoting the specific film although includes information on other features inside the magazine. I think that this cover is very effective in advertising.

Feedback after final cut

This is the feedback that we gained after Mr Mcrae watched our final cut of our trailer. We do not want to change a great deal about the trailer as we are currently very happy with how it looks, However we are definately going to take some on board and edit it. What we definately want to look at is prolonging fades in and out to create further tension. I think that this definately needs to be looked at.

Final

Semi final cut

Finishing the trailer

Here is our final sequence of film.
We have used the 'Zoom' scroller here to enable us to look at small clips of film muc h closer. This is very useful when splitting clips and deleting small scenes as without the zoom it is very difficult to click on such small parts.

We have changed the colour, fuzzyness and appearance of some clips using these tools on the top right. Chnaging the number up and down gives a differenta ppearance.

We have used fades both in and out a number of times in our trailer in order to get from one clip to another.

Here we have dragged film clips from the folder down onto the reel in order to view and edit them before we add them in for final.

We seperated the sound to the actual clips on many occasions, this allowed us to create the scenes where there is a black page or a different image, but the sound of another clip continuing to play.

Feedback

After our rough cut we showed a few of our friends and family so that they could give us feedback on what they thought could be improved. The reason we chose to do this now instead of waiting until we had completely finished was so that we could film some more scenes if necessary.

This is the feedback that we gained. We are going to take it all on board especially the feeback that says we should add some more happy scenes, as once we viewd our rough cut both Kirsty and I agreed this needed to be done.

Filming Photos

Here are some photos from our second round of filming. We filmed during the day therefore in daylight this time in order to get more 'happy' footage before the group become very scared in the nigh time. We found a good location with benches and a fire which we used as a place for the group to be hanging out. These are photos of some of the group filming and looking at footage.
